It’s Now Okay to be Gay on Xbox LIVE

According to the latest update to the Xbox LIVE terms of service, it is now okay to have lesbian, gay, bi, and transsexual signifiers in both Gamertags and Xbox LIVE profiles.

You may use the following terms to express your relationship orientation in your profile or Gamertag:

  • Lesbian
  • Gay
  • Bi
  • Transgender
  • Straight

Other terms regarding relationship orientation are not allowed. In addition you may not use these terms or any other terms regarding relationship orientation to insult, harass, or any other pejorative use against other users.

The Xbox LIVE team also promised to be more vigilant in monitoring the use of sexual orientation.

LGBT gaming news site GayGamer.net, who has been very vocal in their efforts to bring gaming out of the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” era and into a more excepting one, has responded, saying:

This is just fantastic news and news that is a long time coming. This is something we have been fighting for here on GayGamer for a long time and it’s gives us a wonderful feeling to finally see it come to fruition.

Congratulations to Microsoft and Xbox Live for stepping up to the plate and listening to the concerns of an important and oft overlooked section of the gaming community. Bravo!

We here at TheGamerzZone applaud Xbox LIVE, as well, for finally changing what is simply a bad policy, regardless of the good intentions behind it.

  2. Looks like it's time to change my gamertag to LenoChinLesbian666.

Seriously though, as much as I'm all for being able to express your sexual orientation openly, I understand where Microsoft were coming from when they decided to ban those words. In short, Xbox Live (or any online community for that matter) aren't the most mature apples on the tree. Just last night I encountered someone yelling "faaaaaagot" over and over while I was trying to snipe a guy off a turret.

It makes me wonder if they are seriously behind this TOA change or just testing the water. I can't help but worry if it gets too overused and moms start complaining about their kids gaming with those evil gaymers, Xbox Live will end up "gay-free" yet again.

Kinda makes me think about religious beliefs. As far as I know, it's still against the TOA to put on your profile: "My name is Bob. I'm 33, gay, AND a Christian."

I completely get what they were going for, but it was counter-intuitive. Rather than protect gays from being discriminated, it discriminated them from the outset. I like that change, but, like you, I worry about it being misused.

i think like most things it will be used properly by some and misused by the stupid. such is the internet.
