Is This Leaked Footage of Sonic 4?

Joystiq has been receiving reports of leaks of both screenshots and gameplay footage of the upcoming release of Sonic 4, Episode 1. This, as we all know, is nothing uncommon. What is unusual about this particular leak is that it’s a Sonic game that looks good.

The video shows the Alpha stage of the Splash Hill Zone, as well as several other zones shown in the level select menu. And it looks good. Like a real Sonic game. Did I mention it looks good?

Also worthing noting is the Sonic fans, who apparently see this footage and think “You know what, that game clearly sucks.” have decided to do the most effective thing the internet has ever seen: boycott.

But not just any boycott, no. They’re going to boycott Sega…by buying Sonic 1 instead of Sonic 4. That’s right. They’re going to boycott Sega producing a game by buying a game Sega produced. Not that it matters, even realistic boycotts don’t do anything anyway.

Yes. You read that right. A shovel-ware sequel, staring two of the oldest gaming icons, one of which arguably should have mercifully been laid to rest years ago, has sold enough copies to outnumber the residents of the state of Alabama. And with the Winter Olympics now in full swing, don’t expect those numbers to taper off just yet. Mike Hayes, CEO for SEGA America and SEGA Europe had this to say:

“The original Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games was a huge success for SEGA. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games is one of the leading third party games for Wii and DS and we were confident the title would have longevity within retail. The start of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games is a perfect time to ensure SEGA is at the forefront of the consumer’s mind when it comes to recreating that Olympic Winter Games feeling in living rooms everywhere.”

With these games selling as well as they are, don’t be surprised to see one every two years. All we can hope for is a better one, and that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is as good as it looks.

You know that rush you get when you’re playing a Sonic game? If you live in the UK, thanks to theme park Alton Towers and Sega Europe, you can get that same rush in real life. This February, they are launching a Sonic-themed roller coaster called “Sonic Spinball” and hopefully its as fast and reckless as it’s expected to be.

Also, coming to the Alton Towers Hotel, if you’re a super fan of the blurry blue hedgehog, book a night in the Sonic-themed room where you will be able to live, sleep and of course, play the latest and classic Sonic games. That doesn’t sound like a bad vacation spot. This sponsorship is hoping to boost Sonic’s name for 2010 to build hype for the eventual “NEW AND BETTER” Sonic game. Will this be what our furry little Sega mascot needs?
